Job Description

We have an opportunity for an experienced manager to lead on efficiency within a national highway maintenance firm. Background: The hiring company is a major player in the highway maintenance, road surfacing, streetlighting and traffic management sectors. They have a number of long term highway contracts across the UK, specifically in the South (Somerset, Dorset, Kent, various London Boroughs) Context of Role: Due to the nature of the work, the leadership teams on highway maintenance contracts are extremely busy with day-to-day management tasks. The focus is on delivery, rather than performance improvement and efficiency. This role is essentially to be a "critical friend" to the team. We're looking for someone who will move from site to site, spending time with the team to understand how the contract is being run, and to develop new ways of delivering the work more efficiently, to the benefit of the team and the client. The incumbent will be empathetic and understanding to the fact that there will be some resistance to change, but ultimately that they are there to find and plug the leaks, and to make the contract better off financially and operationally. Your job, in essence, will be to inspect how the contract is being run, to discuss ways to make the contract more efficient, and to work with the team to initiate these changes. Your business card may read: Streamlining Guru or Efficiency Expert Candidate Profile: This is an interesting role, with a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Having a good understanding of the highway maintenance industry would be helpful. If you've held in a position on the management team of a highway maintenance contract, that would be very useful. Good project management and implementation skills are a must. Leading people to change, rather than enforcing it, is your greatest asset.
